Play it safe in black, or go bold with colour for my first statement piece?

I am saving up for one really good statement piece and I keep flip-flopping on the colour. My head says classic black, because it goes with everything and always looks sharp. My heart wants a deep red or a bottle green, because those are the pieces that make me stop and stare on other people.

This is something I want to wear for years, so I do not want to regret playing it too safe, but I also do not want to blow the whole budget on a colour I get bored of by autumn. For a first proper investment, what did you go for, and did you regret it?
